Hi, I've got a polygon, and a buffer around the polygon. I need to figure out the furthest distance from a point on the polygon boundary to a point on the buffer boundary. All suggestions welcome! ------------------------------ Martin Burroughs Oldham Council ----------------------------- ...

I'm sure I'm not the most expert, but i'd Buffer the dataset to 500m, and save it as a new table Open the buffered table and the points table Run a sql query joining the two, where points.obj within buffered.obj That would do it, although maybe there's a better way! ------------ ...

I know a lot less than Warren, so i'm sure he's correct! I would say the "straightforward" option for basic users is to use the screen resolution so we get the same view as the screen. That would be a helpful default behaviour. But then being able to change dpi/tile level would be good advanced options. ...

Thanks Warren, I suspect that's good advice! Had another play, and it seems like Mapinfo is deciding on the wrong zoom before any settings are applied. No matter how high or low the res, and no matter what width and height are set, it always goes to the wrong zoom. Even at 50dpi it still zooms in. ...

Thanks Nick, good to have it confirmed I'm not going mad! I have played a bit with size. Even if I leave it to the default, it still screws up the print. Mapinfo people, do I need to report this as an issue? Martin ------------------------------ Martin Burroughs Oldham Council ------ ...

Hi, I've started using the OS API for mapping backgrounds. Quite convenient but I'm hitting some issues exporting. The scale used on screen doesn't match the scale selected when producing a jpg. For example this is (an extract from) my on screen layout: I presume the API is choosing something like ...

Thematic density is usually good. Dot density has the disadvantage that people read the dots as "truth", and where you've got a city with a surrounding rural area within the same region, the dot pattern is not representative of the real pattern which can get people confused. Probably works better where ...

Thanks John. That is interesting, but I'd then need an extra step of combining a large number of pdf's into one doc, and I'm not clear even then whether it would produce alt text on each image! Shame the image route isn't there, but we'll have to work round it I guess. ------------------------------ ...

On a similar note, I've just been through the painful process of IT rebuilding my machine, and having first to find all of the saved settings etc. It'd be useful to have documentation in one place about all of that. Layouts are part of the picture, as are overall preferences, thematic templates, and ...

Thanks Nick, this is interesting and powerful but not sure it does what I'm looking for (probs cos I was too vague!) So when i embed a jpg in a word doc, or pdf or whatever, I'm wanting that to pull through alt text, ie the stuff you sometimes see as hoverovers. By doing this, I think it'll work better ...

I'm currently trying to make some of our documents more accessible. While obviously maps are never going to be that accessible, I'd like to at least add some alt text to the jpgs or whatever I produce. I was presuming that each layout would have metadata like a name and description stored somewhere, ...

Hi, I've been linking Mapinfo to SQL (at the edge of my comfort zone here.) After doing some maintenance work I've now got this error message when I try to map my table. Yep, I've managed to deleted column MI MASTERMAP STYLE So how do I fix this? Can I just delete that entry in the mapcatalog and ...

I like this, but it makes my brian itch. Surely you can't technically move a centroid, it's a mathematical value? What you're actually doing is using a fake centroid and calling it a centroid? Which doesn't mean it isn't useful! ------------------------------ Martin Burroughs Oldham Council - ...

Hi, I've been dong a lot more creating and editing polygons recently, not something I normally do. I'm haivng significant problems editing polygons. Reshape works fine. And Add Nodes works fine. The problem is when I switch back to Reshape from Add Nodes, it (just at random times it seems) switches ...

Persevere John, it gets better quickly :-) Initially I struggled with layouts created in the old version, and conflicts in the new version, but when you're over, it seems a lot smoother and less temperamental. Ditto legends. The move to layouts using a cloned map seems weird at first, but it works ...
