    Hello Automate Community!

Welcome to this week's Tip of the Week.

Before you record your first SAP transaction in Automate Studio, there's one important decision to make: Which recording mode should you use?

Automate Studio offers three recording modes: Standard Mode, Batch Input Mode, and GUI Scripting Mode. Choosing the right one up front can save time and help you build automations that are reliable and easy to maintain.

Let's look at when each one makes the most sense.

    Standard Mode

Standard Mode is the default recording option and the best place to start for most SAP transactions. It's ideal when fields and screens follow a predictable path.

    When to Use It

Use Standard Mode for most day-to-day SAP transactions and data upload scenarios. It is typically the fastest and most reliable option.

    Example

Your procurement team receives a spreadsheet of purchase order updates each week. Rather than manually updating SAP line by line, a Standard Mode script processes the entire file automatically, saving time and reducing data entry errors.

    Tip

Standard Mode is an excellent choice for high-volume uploads where consistency and repeatability are important.

    Batch Input Mode

Batch Input Mode is a good next step when Standard Mode struggles with dynamic screens, custom controls, or more complex transaction behavior. It provides additional flexibility while still delivering reliable performance.

    When to Use It

Try Batch Input Mode when Standard Mode doesn't record or play back a transaction correctly, especially when custom screens or unique transaction logic are involved.

    Example

Your sales operations team needs to automate the creation of complex sales contracts that include multiple line items and special pricing conditions. Standard Mode fails to capture the transaction reliably, but Batch Input Mode records and executes the process successfully.

    Tip

If Standard Mode consistently produces recording or playback issues, Batch Input Mode is often the next mode to try.

    GUI Scripting Mode

GUI Scripting Mode is the go-to option for highly customized SAP screens or processes that require clicks, tabs, and navigation that other recording modes can't capture.

    When to Use It

Use GUI Scripting Mode when Standard Mode and Batch Input Mode cannot capture your process reliably. Think of it as your most flexible recording option for complex UI interactions.

    Example

A production planning team needs to automate confirmations involving dynamic screens and non-standard table controls. GUI Scripting Mode captures these interactions reliably, enabling hundreds of confirmations to be processed automatically.

    Tip

GUI Scripting requires SAP GUI Scripting to be enabled on both the SAP server and client. If you're unsure, check with your SAP Basis team before recording.

    Quick Decision Guide

    Situation

    Best Mode

Standard SAP transaction, most everyday use cases

    Standard Mode

    Batch Input Mode

    Complex or highly customized screens

    GUI Scripting Mode

Still not sure which mode to choose? Start with Standard Mode. If it doesn't work, move to Batch Input Mode. If the transaction involves complex UI interactions or custom screens, try GUI Scripting Mode.
