I ran into a question recently about the best way to sync an entire library through OSR. If the library is new and has not previously been replicated, the process is pretty straightforward. If the library has already been in replication, there is one extra step that helps avoid issues.

For Existing Libraries

If the library has been replicated before, I first stop the current syncing definition from the Library Mirroring screen by using the option to cancel syncing. This clears the way for a fresh synchronization request.

Use Object-Based Sync

The key detail is to configure the library synchronization method as *OBJ instead of *LIB.

From the System Library AutoSync screen, I add the library (or library range) to the selection set and make sure the sync method is set to *OBJ. I also verify any journal settings that may be required for the environment.

After saving the definition, the status should move to Defined. From there, I submit the sync request and watch it progress through the normal states such as Submitted, Loading, and Complete.

Getting the Library Ready

Once the definition is in place:

• Set the library to Ready
• Submit the synchronization request
• Monitor progress through the System Monitor
• Use the Objects Requesting Sync view to verify that the library objects are being processed

I have found that checking the objects requesting sync is a quick way to confirm that the expected objects are entering the synchronization queue.

Takeaway

The biggest thing I see missed is the synchronization method. When syncing an entire library through OSR, make sure the library sync method is configured as *OBJ. That setting is what drives the object-based synchronization process described in the procedure.
