    Hi Alban,

Yes, it is possible with the Native X format.

Go to Backstage, Options, System Settings
Check box for 'Encode Workspace and Tab files'
Set New Table Format to 'MapInfo Extended' and charset to 'UTF-8'
Now when opening the XLS\XLSX file, the TAB file generated will be NativeX  using UTF-8 charset and will open it.

NativeX can support up to 1000 columns.

    Hi Alban,

Not working for me either. What I suggested is just meant for Tab files with more than 250 columns. Sorry about the confusion.

This issue is already filed for a future fix.

    Regards,
    Shweta

Could you save the XLSX file to a CSV file and open this instead?
I haven't tested myself with a 250+ column CSV file.

Ah, if you make sure to uncheck "Create Copy in MapInfo Format for Read/Write" it does work. Thanks, Shweta.

If you choose to "Create Copy in MapInfo Format for Read/Write" you need to make sure your system preference is set to use MapInfo Extended format  (NativeX) for new tables as the default, else it tries to create them in Native format which is capped at 250 columns.

    Hello,

CSV is not very convenient as we have some very large integer in some columns which are being converted by MI as scientific notation when doing the import and we don't want that.

Is there a way to avoid this?

I remember I wrote a case on previous version:

    Case Number
    22064454

which I got told by support it would be fixed on V2019.
    Sadly that's not the case!

So, we are a bit stuck at the moment.

    Best regards
    Alban

    Hi Alban,

We have a fix for this Excel column limit issue and plan to include it in 2019.1.
