  • 1.  How do we move from #coolmap to #locatehere ?

    Posted 10-26-2017 05:33

During the LI Roadshow Events this week we heard a challenge from @Joe Francica? that we need to be thinking about how to move from producing cool maps to ensuring maps are a critical component in answering real-world business problems?

Chatting with Users at the events there were a few experiences shared about approaches that have worked well in their organisation. For example, make sure the map tells a story (not just looks good), also work hard to integrate the map creation & analysis as part of the core operations of your organisation (not an optional "nice to have").

I'd be interested to hear experiences from other community members. Please share in the comments.

Identifying problems and solving them with GIS. Often, I have produced just a list from GIS analysis that solved the problem. For instance, inspection officers have appreciated a list of potential property owners who has a swimming pool (got this from classified airphotos) and has not paid the pool license fee yet (got the licensed pool list from Property system).

Once you solve this, tell this to other sections. Have an awareness workshop / GIS Day to showcase best case studies within the Council (from other agencies too).

Great point - the output from location analysis doesn't have to be in the form of a map!

    GIS without a #coolmap? That's Location Intelligence, isn't it :-)

True. I agree that Location Intelligence is the enabler, the glue to gain insight and derive the solution. While the answer maybe delivered in a non spatial format (e.g. the example shared by @Thiru Ponnusamy? ? ) does including a map make the answer more meaningful? How much extra value does the the map bring?
