  • 1.  Free Data?!

I'm not sure if this has been shared/posted previously, but I've found a link to a useful website that contains links to free GIS data! Point your browser to https://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/ to find a myriad of links to data across the globe!

For UK GIS/MapInfo users, you can obtain free Ordnance Survey data from https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/opendatadownload/products.html which gives you a good place to start with regards to base mapping.

For GeoCoding addresses, you can visit https://www.getthedata.com/open-postcode-geo/ where you can download a CSV of Open Postcode Geo which is being published under the OGL. It's derived from ONS Post Code Directory; it doesn't have individual property Post Codes but does have Post Code area points which would at least enable you to run a Post Code query against. It's free! It weighs in at 400mb TAB file after being imported into MapInfo, so the data is usable in MapInfo 15 and up!

    Nice one Matt

I would rely more on the OS Code-Point Open dataset?, which is updated twice a year for GB Postcodes - although it does look like OS is the source of this anyway!

Don't forget that you have 1000 credits per month to geocode to AdddresBase Premium in MapInfo Pro v16

Ahh I didn't realise there was an OS Open Code-Point! Typically when I'm geocoding I'll use either OS Code-Point or our build of AddressBase Premium, but thought that these datasets may come in useful for none PSMA members? Besides which, it's always nice to get something for free?! :-)
