Base unit of measure is not a problem. You can read that simply with a Transaction MM02/MM03 recording and then update it using a MM02 recording.
Alternate unit(s) of measure is more challenging. One way to be able to safely use Transaction for updating AUoM is if your materials have the same exact alternate units of measure that will be sorted in the same order. So if all your materials are like that (it's likely they are not), then you can just make a recording of the exact unit you want to update, because you would know which row it would always be on. Additionally, if you have a small number of alternate units (less than 10, because you cannot page down on this screen), you could also download the units and values into unique columns (each unit and their values would be a unique field) and then again, you could update each as unique fields. You will end up with a lot of columns this way, but it will work.
If none of the scenarios above will work for you, then you will need to use BAPIs for both the read and update, or use If on Index functionality to update, which is only available with Gui Scripting recording mode.
