  • 1.  What is a Winshuttle Runner

    Posted 02-26-2020 10:18
    Hello All,

I have a few questions about being a Winshuttle Runner and publishing scripts.  I'm using Studio 12.1 and Transaction with SAP.

    Questions:
    • I'm looking for details on how the Publish portion of Winshuttle works?  Pros and cons, best practices.
    • Is it possible for a non-Winshuttle user to enter data into a Published workbook and have all the script validations in the script execute?
    • What are the [system] requirements to be a Runner?
    • How do I move the script field validation sets  into the workbook as data validation?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out the best way to have SMEs populate data in a published workbook, or create a workbook with data validation based on script validation sets.  So, to recap, when I publish a workbook using Winshuttle, can a non-Winshuttle user successfully enter and validate data in the file?  The goal is to be able to develop templates that allow users to enter data, have the template validate the data, then have the user send the completed template to me for running in Winshuttle.

Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi Shelia,
There are many good how to guides on the Winshuttle website as well as on this forum as you have questions has helps me for the past 2 plus years being a developer. (Training) Saved as a favorite of mine.
Your second question we have several instances where users fill in the data to the workbook then a assigned person with a runner access execute the Winshuttle script.
This is what I have used for PC [system] requirements for Winshuttle 12.1. My understanding is that runner or developer is the same. (requirements)

On your overall question a none user can not run a validation of the data. A user that has a Winshuttle license would need to run the validation to confirm the data would load successfully into SAP. Rules and function in cells could be written into the excel workbook to validate data. This is something I have done. This improves the data and confidence to both user and runner that the data is good be for loading. A few examples are amount of caricatures allowed in a field such as description. A few rules I have set in the excel cell to stop at a caricature count number (38) or turn the cell red if the description is to long to let the user know it is in error. Also I have done drop downs of only values that can be used. These examples are all done on the excel side not by Winshuttle. I Googled a lot on rules that can be done in excel the past 2 years and still do.

I'm uncertain what you mean by "publishing a portion of Winshuttle works", or what you mean by "system requirements to be a Runner".

A "runner" is an individual who is licensed to use Studio ("Professional" license) and who is therefore able to run scripts against SAP systems ("runners" cannot develop Winshuttle scripts, they can only run them, hence the name).  From my understanding, a Winshuttle Runner is not supposed to run scripts using another users SAP credentials (runners are only supposed to run scripts against PRODUCTION systems using their own SAP login credentials)... so if a runner does not have the SAP authorizations to run a script against a particular tcode, someone else (with the proper SAP authorizations) would have to a runner license for those tcode activities.

Much of what you are trying to do sounds like a Winshuttle Forms & Workflow type application, but you are trying to accomplish this in Studio.  I'm uncertain how the licensing works for your particular situation (I don't feel comfortable advising on licensing), that is something we would need to have Winshuttle chime in to clarify.

    Hi Shelia-

If you are trying to have the SMEs validate something that's been set on the Winshuttle script side (allowed values, required field, conditionally required field, etc), then that SME needs to have a Winshuttle license.  They would either be doing this data validation using the Winshuttle Excel add-in or the Winshuttle Studio client, and using those requires a valid Winshuttle license.  They would need a Runner license at a minimum.  The system requirements for a Runner are essentially the same as a Developer, like you.

If you have further questions regarding licensing, please feel to reach out to your Account Rep, Rob Hanson.

    Thank you!
