  • 1.  Query Criteria: Equals Blank

    I'd like to confirm how ya'll enter criteria in a query to say if field X equals blank. Should it be "=" and then in the value box "{blank}"?  I found "Not Null" is working for my results but not sure if appropriate.

    You are correct.  Null and and Not Null are common when working with databases.  It all depends on the tools/applications you are working with.

    • Not Null   is equivalent to   !=""  or <> ""  and also   Is Not Blank 
    • Is Null       is equivalent to   =""     and also   Is Blank

    Null and Blank are NOT the same thing. in ASCII hexadecimal representation NULL is 00 and blank is 20. Therefore, "" (NULL) is not equal to " " (BLANK).

    • Not Null  is equivalent to  != ""   or <> ""  
    • Not Blank is equivalent to  != " "  or <> " "  
    • Is Null   is equivalent to  = ""    
    • Is Blank  is equivalent to  = " "
