The function module is a set of transports that are typically installed in SAP by the basis team. I think it was originally created to improve the performance of Query scripts, and was later enhanced to support adaptive query throttling. I know that, from a basis/security perspective, the function module can be used to restrict Query output (ensure the safety of your normal SAP operations)... for example, our WFM doesn't allow us to enter greater than a certain number of materials in an "IN" statement while trying to extract data from SAP tables. I think the WFM is also what allows for linking of tables in Query. When changes are made to SAP in various ways (e.g. security changes), the function module allows for adapting to these changes without having to make major changes to SAP security (or reversing patches). Function module updates are typically backwards compatible.

Subject: Install Function Module
We have used Winshuttle for a number of years successfully without installing a function module in SAP to use. One of our users as asked for a function module to be added to SAP so he can get greater functionality from the solution. What does this function module enable the user do above the existing installation?
