    Checkboxes can be used to determine whether a workflow task is necessary or should be skipped. You have to pay some special attention to the syntax in the transition, but if you get it right, it works well.
    In the attached cheat sheet I describe how its done for the use case: Material Creation - depending on what material type it is, some views are included or excluded therefore the workflow steps to gather the data need to be executed or skipped.
