Thanks Sam, one MRD file per image is fine, I see that the .TAB file points to this. One more question though, whilst I don't want pure white pixels to be transparent, I do sometimes want magenta pixels to be transparent. The option to do this under Adjust Image Styles does not seem to be applied ...

Measurements in MapInfo will be approximate only, for example any hills/slopes will add walking distance which MapInfo won't take into account using the standard measurement tool. You could purchase a Measuring Wheel ($20-$30 on ebay) and walk the route, see what that says? If it's more than 3 miles, ...
