What I ran into
Recently came across a scenario where both were planned together:
- Power9 → Power10 migration
- IBMi 7.4 → 7.5 upgrade
Simple question: Will CDC just keep working?
Hardware move – smooth sailing
For a hardware-only migration, CDC is pretty relaxed:
"Change the server, I'll still replicate."
Since CDC depends on journals and receivers, and they remain unchanged, replication typically resumes without issues.
Still, validation post-migration is always a good idea.
OS upgrade – a different story
This is where things shift.
Try upgrading to IBMi 7.5 while on CDC 5.7, and CDC reacts like:
"You upgraded everyone… except me?"
Because:
- CDC 5.7 is NOT supported on IBMi 7.5
- You need CDC 5.8.04+ before upgrading the OS
Quick reality check before upgrading
- Stop Change Selectors
- Drain queues
- Stop Replication
- Shut down kernels
- Upgrade → restart → validate
Skipping these seems small… until it isn't.
What stood out
- Hardware upgrades are forgiving
- OS upgrades demand preparation
CDC is reliable - but only if you treat it right 😉
Your turn
Do you plan hardware and OS changes separately, or bundle them together and hope CDC behaves the same?
Anyone else seen "OS upgrade surprises"? 😄
