When you have unzipped the gz file, have you ensured that the files have the extension *.gml ??

Yeah, I used UT because that was the instructions in the support documentation for OS MasterMap.
I did actually try the method you describe above but I get nothing the unizipped GMLs but got the error message:
"Unable to access <gml filepath> file".
So frustrating to be paying a provider who sends us data in a format we can't use without requiring third party software, and even more frustrating that MapInfo claims to support GML when it doesn't and insists you need to pay a significant fee to a third party to access useful formats.

Hi Ryan
For this process you will need to unzip the gz files (using 7-zip). This usually results in files that do not include the extension .gml - so you will need to add that.
Then you area ready to >Import. Not the Universal Translator!!
This is an option on the >Open dialogue.
The default is .mif. Change to OS MasterMap (*.gml). Select your files and it should produce a set of files for each file/chunk of gml data. This will use the standard OS Schema for MasterMap. Note: You will get duplicate objects at the edges of each chunk of data.
Or you could purchase a professional translator like MapGML https://www.cdrgroup.co.uk/sales_3rdparty_gml.htm
