Syncsort Storage Management – Release Notification

Precisely announces the release of Syncsort Storage Management enhancements, designed to improve your product performance through automation and optimization. To implement these improvements, you will need to install Syncsort Storage Management 7.2.2. This release provides an updated installation from all previous releases of the Syncsort Storage Management or former DTS Software products.
Summary of Enhancements
Syncsort Allocation Control Center Defrag
Precisely is pleased to announce the new Syncsort Allocation Control Center (ACC) Defrag functions that help z/OS environments improve disk space utilization, reduce fragmentation, and lower the risk of out-of-space conditions-automatically and continuously.
These enhancements extend the ACC functionality by performing defragmentation at the dataset level, as datasets are deallocated, rather than relying on periodic, standalone defragmentation jobs. The result is more efficient use of DASD resources with less operational overhead.
The ACC Defrag functions operate when datasets are deallocated and are applied based on policy driven pool definitions. Defragmentation occurs automatically when enabled, ensuring optimization happens consistently without changes to application JCL or workflows.
When used alongside Syncsort Space Recovery System (SRS), these enhancements further improve the reliability and efficiency of the storage management subsystem.
Idle Space Release
Upon dataset deallocation, unused space at the end of sequential and partitioned datasets will automatically be released. By Immediately freeing unused space at the end of the dataset, volumes are less likely to exceed SMS utilization thresholds, and more free space becomes available for future allocations. This also reduces the likelihood of out-of-place errors.
Extent Consolidation
Merge physically adjacent extents into a single extent during dataset deallocation. This reduces the number of extents and volumes a dataset occupies, increases available contiguous space on the volume, and further minimizes fragmentation.
Cobol Migration Manager
Precisely is excited to announce two updates that improve the performance and usability of the Cobol Migration Manager.
System sort invoked to retrieve CMM SMF records
Performance is improved when CMM reads information from SMF datasets by using the system sort to select and process records.
PROGI table conversion
The PROGI dataset is converted to an internal table during SMF record processing to reduce the need for I/O.
Additional Features, Fixes, Functions, and Improvements
Simulate/2000
A separate load library and separate started task are no longer required for the Simulate/2000 product. All Syncsort Storage Management products are now delivered in a single load library.
Dataset size calculation corrected for EATTR=OPT datasets
The &SIZE variables did not reflect all the space occupied for datasets allocated in the cylinder-managed space on EAV volumes. Processing was corrected to properly handle F8/F9 DSCBs.
Additional SMF Records
The Space Recovery System records and the SRSSMF reporting program are updated to include the new SMF records written by the ACC Defrag functions (Idle Space Release and Extent Consolidation).
