In last week's article, we discussed how to create a layout template with placeholders and texts that you could reuse for your outputs. This approach created a workspace with a layout window that you could add to your current session and then modify with a map.

However, there is a more clever way using the Layout Template add-in. The Layout Template add-in has been integrated nicely into the MapInfo Pro interface. Many users won't notice that they are using an add-in.

The Layout Template add-in has two major features:

    It allows you to

    1. Save a layout with maps, thematic legends, and more as a layout template.
    2. Pick a layout template from the New Layout dropdown, and populate this with windows automatically

     Let's check it out.

Before we begin, ensure that you have the Layout Template add-in loaded. It should be set to autoload by default.

    Save Layout as Layout Template

The Layout Template add-in takes the burden out of creating the layout template. You can use any layout that you have already developed and published with maps, browsers, and text frames.

Make sure your layout is the active window, and then from the Layout tab, click on the Save As Template button in the Page group.

Enter a descriptive name and a longer description for this new layout template in the Save Template dialog.

Before saving the new template, you must select where to save it in the Save to: field. The options available to you depend on your MapInfo Pro configuration. You can always save them as My Templates. This means they will be saved locally on your computer in a subfolder in your Local AppData folder: %localappdata%\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\2300\Tools\LayoutTemplate\Templates\My Templates.
If you have activated the WorkGroup Directory under Directory Preferences and specified a folder, the Shared option will also be available. This enables you to share layout templates across your organization.
The Export as ZIP file option allows you to create a ZIP file containing all the template files. In this way, you can share the template with coworkers or people outside of your organization. The receiver can import the layout template from the ZIP file. You can also export an existing template into a ZIP file.
When you click on the Save button, the template will be saved in the preferred location.
The layout gets saved into a LAY file and an XML file that holds details about the layout template, such as name and description. In the subfolder, you will find a thumbnail of the layout as it looked when you created the template. The subfolder will also contain any image files that may have been in the layout.
Now you are ready to use the layout template.

    Using a Layout Template

Let's see how easy it is to use a layout template for a new output.

Make sure that you have a map window open.

Now, select the layout template you want to use from the New Layout dropdown on the Layout tab.

MapInfo Pro will now open the layout stored in the layout template and populate the placeholders with the maps, browsers, and legends.
The inserted map will match the center coordinate and the zoom width of the original map.
A couple of things to be aware of when using the Layout Template add-in:
    • If you have no maps open or multiple maps open, the placeholder for the map may not get populated automatically.
    • If you have no browsers open or multiple browsers open, the placeholder for the browser may not get populated automatically.
    • You can manually change the center and zoom of your map window after it has been populated.
    • The placeholder for the legend may not be filled with legends for all layers.
    • You must still manually modify static text frames.

You can read more about working with the Layout Template add-in in the MapInfo Pro documentation on the Precisely Help Center.

    Have a happy #MapInfoMonday!

    Hello,
I'm posting here because I can't create new posts; I can only reply to existing ones.
Sorry for posting here, and please create a post specifically for my question.

My department is looking to repurchase MapInfo 2023 licenses. Some sites offer MapInfo Advanced or MapInfo Premium

What are the differences? How do I navigate them? Thank you for your help. Sincerely,

    Hey Thomas

Premium refers to the Bing Maps add-on, which we previously referred to as Bing Premium. You can read more about the Bing Maps add-on here: MapInfo Monday: Bing Maps add-on.

MapInfo Pro Advanced includes the raster and 3D Map creation capabilities.

If you purchase MapInfo Pro Subscription, this also includes MapInfo Pro Advanced.

P.S.: Please contact our support team (support@precisely.com) to have your account fixed, so you can post questions and respond to posts.
