Here's an article describing how to use Erase/Erase Outside to clip out elements that overlap or don't overlap.
Do remember to make a copy of your data before performing these actions!
You can calculate object area and lengths using SQL:
Select ObjectLen(obj, "m") From SomeTable Into Selection
For a single object, you can just double-click the object to see the object area/length
