Assure Security Impacts of using License Manager 10.0.13.00 or higher.

    Technical Alert

Precisely is making security improvements to License Manager. As of License Manager 10.0.13.00, Product-Level Security (PLS) will be turned on by default. While Assure Security 7.0.07.00 is not shipping with this version of License Manager, nor does the product use PLS, this does impact Assure Security users in the following scenarios:

    ·       If you upgrade other Precisely products (such as Assure MIMIX HA 10.0.13.00) that includes License Manager 10.0.13.00 or higher.

    ·       Future Assure Security Service packs that may include these License Manager security improvements.

These License Manager security improvements can impact the ability of users not defined to PLS to install future Assure Security releases, service packs, and fixes. It may also impact their ability to work with license keys.

With License Manager 10.0.13.00, Product-Level Security (PLS) is now required to be enabled on the License Manager (LAKEVIEW library) itself. After the first upgrade of License Manager to 10.0.13.00 or higher, PLS will be set to a "grace" mode to allow configuration of your PLS settings, during which you can turn PLS security off and on while adjusting your PLS configuration. As part of this upgrade, the PLS setting for *PUBLIC for License Manager (LAKEVIEW library) is changed from *DSP to *EXCL (Exclude). Grace mode is ended by any additional upgrade to a higher service pack.

    Action to take

Identify users that need to use License Manager functionality and add them into Product-Level Security (PLS) with the proper level of access.
The procedures outlined in the "Using License Manager" manual, under "Changing product-level security" section details how to add additional users.

Please note that while the License Manager 10.0.13.00 changes listed above are new to License Manager, PLS functionality has been available in the product for many years.  Thus, this action can be done now or after the first time License Manager is upgraded to 10.0.13.00 or higher.

    Wh
    at is Product-Level Security (PLS)?

Product-Level Security (PLS) is License Manager functionality that provides additional authority controls for commands within an installed Precisely product that is separate from the object authority provided by the operating system. Implementing PLS on the License Manager (LAKEVIEW library) itself affects the general functionality in License Manager, including initial installation, upgrades and installs of fixes, even if the product being installed or upgraded has not implemented PLS. When using PLS, each user who is authorized to use License Manager must be configured, including the level of access for each user (*DSP, *OPR, *MGT, *ADM, or *EXCL).

When PLS is turned on for a product, an administrator can:

Limit access to the License Manager product by configuring the product authority function.

Change the authority level of License Manager and product commands by using the command authority function.

See the "Using License Manager" manual, under "
    Precisely-provided product-authority

    functions" for more information.
