Thanks for providing this bug report.
The TIFF files you supplied are in COG format (Cloud Optimised Geotiff) and they contain "overview" levels within the TIFF. Our native TIFF driver does not currently handle COGs so it passes the TIFF on to the GDAL driver, which does handle this format. The GDAL driver is trying to generate missing overview levels and, unfortunately, is entering into an infinite loop. It uses all memory and takes down your machine.
We will try to get this resolved urgently. We have a 17.04 patch being prepared and we will try to get a fix incorporated into that patch.
