In continuing Spectrum's journey to be more cloud friendly, the Enterprise Designer will be replaced with the web-based Flow Designer.  It is being rolled out in two phases:  Fall 2019 and mid-year 2020.  With the mid-year 2020 release, the Flow Designer will fully replace Enterprise Designer – marking a huge shift in how you interact with your flows.

I'm sure you're curious about how this change will impact you. Well, the best part is, you can help us make the Flow Designer better for you! The Flow Designer engineering team are hosting a 30-minute online event to show community members the new Flow Designer and give you an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. This event is only available to community members, so be sure you're signed up or signed in to register.

Community members can register for this exclusive Knowledge Communities event by clicking here.

Please note that the Flow Designer is still being developed and subject to change.

    Hi all,

The recording of the Flow Designer event is available online.

Rick Dukeshier, Lead Engineer for the Flow Designer gave the demo and answered questions that Community Members asked, such as

    - Will Flow Designer has all of the same features as Enterprise Designer?
    - Are flows created in Flow Designer compatible with Enterprise Designer and Vice Versa?
    - Are Process Flows support in Flow Designer?
    - Is there debugging support for Groovy in custom transforms?

Community members can access it by clicking here. The video is hosted by webinar site so it will ask you for your email address before showing you the video.

If you have any follow up questions about the Flow Designer, you can ask them in this post and we will get you answers to your questions.

    Hi Jason,

    The Flow Designer looks great.
Looking forward to the preview in the upcoming release.

I had few cosmetic related queries.
In the Flow Designer, is there a possibility to:
    1. Zoom in, Zoom out, pan directly in the canvas?
    2. Type in the stage name directly in the canvas?
    3. Add annotation in the dataflows which explain what each stage is doing (similar to FME workbench)?

    Thanks!

    Hi Ruchi

    1. Yes, you can zoom in/out & pan directly on the canvas using your mouse or trackpad.
    2. You will have the ability to rename stages directly on the flow, just as in Enterprise Designer.
    3. Support for notes is a new feature that we plan to include in the 2020 release.

    Thanks!

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

The new designer looks very well and our customers are waiting for it.

    Following questions:

    1. Do we have list what kind of functionalities are coming into the next release?
    2. How do we handle the version control for the future into the web based flow designer?
    3. How do we handle the logging of data flows into the web based flow designer?
      • Do we plan a multi-tendency work on the data flows?
      • If not, how do we handle the logged data flows, if a user are doing not a correct close of the dataflows? At the moment, the user itself has to do a correct close of the data flows or the administration has to unlock it.
Thanks a lot for your help.

    Best Regards
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas

    1. This list is still being finalized.  However, the initial release of Flow Designer will be focused on basic dataflow (i.e. service, job, & subflow) capabilities.
    2. Versioning is currently targeted for the 2020 release.
3a. Multi-tenancy support in Spectrum is much bigger than just Flow Designer. Unfortunately, I'm not privy to where that is in the current pipeline.
3b. Logging out of Flow Designer will automatically check-in all currently opened flows. Furthermore, we have added a new unlock permission. Users with this permission can unlock flows via the Flow Designer Manager page.

    Thanks!

    Rick
