Upgrade to Foundation v12

    Hi,
We are currently on version 11.2 and I want to see if anybody has gone thru an upgrade project and move their Winshuttle platform to version 12? that'd include all components from Studio to Foundation to Function module.

    - What was your experience with this Upgrade to v12? What are the top 3 value-add you realized after Upgrade? Is it worth to go thru this upgrade from 11.2? or shall we wait for later versions?
    - How long did it take to complete "technical upgrade"....(not including retest and making sure current solutions are working)
    - What are the watch out's for such project?
    - What are the main dependencies, system requirements to consider from 11.2 ==> 12

    Thanks,
    Ocal Yilmaz

We're just working through the end of our v11 upgrade, looking to upgrade to v12 sometime this summer.

Reason being, all major web browsers are going to stop supporting TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in early 2020, and Winshuttle v12 is the first version of the software to support TLS 1.2... so my take on this is that if we don't upgrade to v12 by early 2020 (March), we run the risk of our Winshuttle solutions 'breaking' when the browsers we use (IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc) stop supporting TLS 1.1.

    Hi Ocal,
We are currently working with Winshuttle to install v 12.0 with User Governance. We are currently running 10.7 with Central for licensing.  We had to upgrade because our company is migrating to SAP GUI version 750 which 10.7 is not compatible with.  The upgrade will require Winshuttle Professional services so make sure you factor in the cost.  Our IT department has had to build a couple of servers and a new SharePoint environment.  We were planning to move to SharePoint on line but you must have SharePoint on premises to install User Governance.  We are installing today and the actual install should only take a couple of hours.

From what I understand, the upgrade form v11 to v12 is a much less daunting task (in comparison to upgrading from v10 to v11).  We recently upgraded from v10 to v11, and that wasn't exactly fun.  We went the route of creating two separate, fully functional environments, to ease the transition efforts, and we're currently at the stage of trying to migrate the final, most complex solution, so that we can shut down the old v10 environment.  From my understanding, there's a new data warehousing feature available in v12 (something I'm interested in), but I'm not yet sure what effect that has on the server architecture (if another server is required for the data warehousing feature, or if that features resides on the existing SQL server).

Thanks Jeremie and Monica for your  valuable inputs. Our company is also planning to upgrade GUI version to 750 soon and this may be a good time to upgrade our Winshuttle platform to v12 as well. I am just trying to come up with some rough effort estimate about this Upgrade project.
Monica - Please keep us posted with your ongoing upgrade and let us know if any watch out's...we are currently on v11 and using Enterprise Studio developer licenses...so not sure if we will run into any Professional license needs but if you can let me know more about this, that'd be great.
Good luck both for your projects !

I don't think the switch from logon pad 730 to 750 is going to be an issue for you.  We made that switch for our v10 to v11 upgrade, and it was pretty seamless.

Really...I was also hoping that SAP GUI upgrade wouldn't be a big deal, but I've been in contact with Support and they told me that SAP GUI 750 requires an upgrade to minimum version 11.2.12
In that case, I will plan for v12 upgrade but can you please let me know your exact version for 11? ...we are in 11.2 and Support asked us to upgrade in order to use SAP GUI 750

Thanks again Jeremie...this is very VERY helpful.

We are running an 'enhanced' version (with various patches and Studio ''fixes") of 11.2.12.

Jeremy - that's right...11.2.12 is the minimum version required for upgrading to SAP GUI 750....we are on 11.2 so it will make more sense to upgrade to v 12 in our case.

    Hi Ocal,

I upgraded our development environment a few weeks ago from 11 to 12. I had one issue due to an typoed Foundation site being in the Foundation Setup screen, but otherwise had no issues. Each installer completed and all sites were operation afterwards with no additional tweaking. Afterwards, we moved down four large solutions and ran through them. None of the solutions required tweaking.

I've done hundreds of upgrades and this was by far the most solid and smoothest experience, especially given our internal infrastructure complexity. We are targeting our acceptance environment by end of January and Production by end of February. I will come back and reply after those are finished with any comments.

That being said, I do run an optimized security design which helps eliminates normal security cross-over issues. For customers upgrading, the high-level checklist is:

    • Ensure the installing account has local admin.
    • On the SharePoint box, ensure the installing account is a farm admin.
    • Ensure the installing account has db_owner to all Winshuttle databases.
    • Ensure the installing account has SPDataAccess roles on the SharePoint config and content databases.
    • Ensure the installing account has Security Admin and DB Creator roles on the SQL server containing the above databases.
    • Make sure any Foundation sites have their setup wizard completed.
    • Publish at least one script to every Foundation (User Governance) site. You may have to use SharePoint Central Admin to make an inventory.
You may have to temporarily elevate your installing account to these roles for the upgrade.

Joshua, did you have to do anything special to accommodate the new data warehousing feature in v12?

I don't recall having to do anything but run the installer the second time to create the warehousing database, but the warehouse database resides on the same instance as the source workflow database so all the required permissions and roles were in place for that account.

We haven't tapped into the API yet, but I checked and all the jobs have been running successfully and the tables are populated.

Thanks Joshua - great tips and appreciate your sharing these....Glad to hear that v12 upgrade went smoothly.
I am also in touch with Support and getting this started. I will share any take-away's as we go thru this process.
