Some GIS professionals are struggling with leadership that hasn’t yet seen the light (or maybe seen the map). What advice would you give them in terms of making the case for expanded use of spatial analytics?

It comes down to value. Can an organization make better decisions when they have better insights into their data?

Find a problem that the organization is struggling with and find a way to display it on a map. There's always a leader looking for a way to look smart, and if you help them, they'll come back for more!

The webinar we did on ROI was illustrative of how geospatial information impacts the gross domestic product of a country. This can be extrapolated to local and state government as well. The estimate is that geospatial technology will add 0.5% to 1.0% to the GDP.

Put it 'in the palm of their hands' Give them every reason to use it because it is so simple. Make GIS work with their iPad. Enable them to log onto their web platform & quickly bang out analysis while hosting a webinar. Be the crutch that they lean on that adds value & credibility to your company. Never stop evolving your approach. Always invest in more data.

the more we can show business value the easier it is to gain credibility. we've done a number of studies that show how better geocoding can save companies money. These studies typically look at the locations of poor geocodes and what that costs the business. For many organizations this can be a significant amount of revenue generated or costs reduced when better geocodes are used. According to Forbes many R&D, Sales and Marketing departments are placing the highest importance on location intelligence data for 2018.

For a city that is generating $100M in tax revenue could assume that GIS has created $1M in value because of applications in land use, urban development, environmental risk assessment, and economic development.

Use the numbers behind the data to provide concrete facts. Convey how leveraging a GIS strategy influences? KPIs supported by analytics that prove this. When possible, use financial values associated with data like address points to show total exposure, market potential, client base, etc. - whatever it is you're trying to quantify.

I've been here, I've had those discussions when you see that manager thinking about what's for lunch, rather than listening to the value you can offer... It hard, but

sometimes our passion and belief in what we do can sometimes be a turn off. Since moving to PB, I've seen a number of customers with this issue and also taken time to speak to their management. What's funny, I'm not saying anything different, I'm just a different person telling them. I did that, I invited PB colleagues to come in to my former employer and explain the value to spatial to their business. Use #FreeYourGIS and WorldGISDay in November to organize an internal event and promote what you do... get others to do that for you... we are PB would always be willing to support this.

@Corey Graft (National UC Realty)? interesting point, but should the question be about the right tool for the right user. MI Pro is an amazing desktop GIS, but not the right tool for the CEO or business user. They want simplicity, a business tool that provides GIS capabilities but the usability that they experience on a daily basis. A tool like Spectrum Spatial Analyst, which is designed to work on the any device
