  • 1.  How do you download MapInfo Pro Viewer without downloading MapInfo?

    It seems that the only way to get Pro Viewer is to download and install MapInfo v17.0.2. How do other employees gain access to the free Pro Viewer without MapInfo?

    Hi Emma

    Yes, you need to install MapInfo Pro 17.0.2 to get access to MapInfo Pro Viewer.
    Basically, MapInfo Pro Viewer is MapInfo Pro run with a specific parameter which tell MapInfo Pro to behave differently.

    This also means that you can launch MapInfo Pro Viewer if you have a licensed copy of MapInfo Pro 17.0.2 installed.

    A few things that might explain the reasons behind this:
    1. MapInfo Pro and MapInfo Pro Viewer are using the same code base and so maintained as the same "product".
    2. MapInfo Pro supports all the languages that MapInfo Pro supports
    3. We only need to maintain one installer
    4. After trying out MapInfo Pro via a Trial License you can decide to continue using MapInfo Pro Viewer if that has the capabilities you need.
    5. MapInfo Pro Viewer is MapInfo Pro with some controls, tabs and groups hidden or disabled.

    The parameter you need to specify to run MapInfo Pro in a Viewer mode is this: -"subscription=on". Not that you need to know this as you get two shortcuts when installation MapInfo Pro 17.0.2: MapInfo Pro and MapInfo Viewer.

    Hi,
    Ideally we'd like to be able to deploy Pro Viewer to some users who don't need the full version of MapInfo Pro.
    It would be better if when the installer is run there is an option to only install Pro Viewer (and also only install the full version). This could be as simple as "hiding" the launcher icon for the full version (so it doesn't appear in the start menu, desktop, etc).
    I understand that Pro Viewer is a limited skin of the full version, but is it should be possible to remove the launch icon from the start menu?
    I suspect having two "versions" of the application will confuse some users.
    We will have our IT support package up the software and deploy it to users. Ideally we'd have two software packages - one for Pro Viewer only and one for the full version.

    That's a great suggestion, Kalu.

    I would think we could consider adding a few install parameters like: OnlyViewerShortcut and OnlyProShortcut to support that.

    @James Stone, is this something you wont to take note of?​

    So there is only one install but 2 shortcuts.
    So we can delete the MapInfo Pro shortcut/menu item??

    I believe this will be around as long s MapInfo Pro v15 is supported.
    And no notification as yet - usually 12 months notice of retirements.
