    Anyone have any success or experience in creating semi-transparent callout boxes or regions used as such with text inserted?
    Does it require adding in layout or bringing in from another program?

    I'll just say that adding call out boxes and automatic text boxes around label text is one of the things I've been requesting for along time.  I logged a job on the software ideas portal many years ago, and it is one of the highest ranked ideas, but so far no improvements in this space.

    Maybe try Corel products like Corel Draw especially its trace bitmap engine. Good luck.

    Thank you for your responses!  Let's keep pushing for the real solution.  Someone who writes a lot for mapping software also suggested Google Drawing-it apparently is a friendly import.  I haven't tried it but thought to share.
