Any plans to reinstate MapShop-like functionality

  • 1.  Any plans to reinstate MapShop-like functionality

    Posted 12-13-2018 21:16
    Hi,

I may have posted something like this previously but I noticed a previous discussion Here in regards to Map series printing which reminded me of a recent Idea's posting I've been involved with Here about previous MapShop functionality and why we need it.

Just thought it might be useful to discuss community thoughts on this and find out whether there is any possible plans to work on putting something like this back into MapInfo Pro?

I would like to support this suggestion, I have several clients who still run VERY old version of MapInfo simply so they can use MapShop.

I appreciate your posts on the MapShop functionality.  Although there are users who need this capability, there has not been a strong expression of interest from the MapInfo Pro user community.  We are looking into the work required to create an updated add-in and will try to find a partner to sponsor this effort.  I have created a reminder to myself to post a follow-up in a month to report on our progress.

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for looking into this. I can definitely appreciate your feedback in regards to the lack of interest of the larger MapInfo user community however like you said there are still users that 'need' this capability and i would go as far as to say that MapInfo users in Australian Local Governments would benefit greatly if this is developed.
Coincidentally and as an example i am currently staring down the barrel of creating and maintaining 131 maps/layouts for a local planning scheme which could be reduced to approximately 18 maps if Map series creation/printing was implemented similar to that of ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.

I very much look forward to your findings and progress on this.
    Cheers

    Hi Joel

Did you have a look at the tool mentioned in the discussion link, you provided originally?
    This one: SiteMapper x64

I spent some time on some issues in the tool with @Steven Graham and @Kalu Ribush, who wrote the tool. Not sure if we get all the issues fixed. If not, we might have to get tech support involved to have a look at the final issues.

    Hi Peter,

Thank you for the reply, i have attached an example of the layout i will be trying to use, essentially i will have to build the template first and hopefully be able to use smart text to make sure scales and other names based on maps etc. will be correct for every output from sitemapper. Will site mapper respect these smart text fields for each layout? Is there anything you can see on the template that i may have issues with?

    Cheers

    Hi Joel

SmartText will be supported so you can use that for dynamic text such as the scale of the map. SiteMapper can also put a value from your table onto the layout.

I do however expect some issues around the Inset Map you have. SiteMapper doesn't support this. And I also foresee some issues if you were to use the Overview tool to handle this. SiteMapper will clone your layout and so the Overmap tool will loose "contact" to the Inset Map.

    Hi @Joel Cranston,
Depending on how you have created the scale bar, this may not be replicated. If it is a scalebar created with the Layout Scalebar Tool, then this does not get cloned in MapInfo. The Clone Layout function in MapInfo will not clone the Layout Scalebar. I have tried raising this with PB as a bug, but they have dismissed this as "working as intended". If you add a dynamic scalebar to the Map Window then this will get cloned. Alternatively, if all your maps are going to be the same scale, then you can create a scalebar in the Layout window manually (using the drawing tools) then this will get cloned.

    Hi Kalu

Have you considered not cloning the layout for every new map but just updating it with the information for the next record?

I assume that would require that you make small changes such as zoom to the record in the map, update the title and filename placeholders. With the new layout, the frames have ID so you could remember the IDs that you need to change.

Just throwing some ideas out there :-)

    Hi Joel, Peter and Steve,
The Site Mapper tool should work in most instances. There's an issue with it not replicating automatic labels in the cloned maps. I've raised this with software support. At first they had trouble replicating the issue, but after recently remoting into my machine the could observe the issue. I was also eventually able to get them to replicate the issue at their end. I suspect it is going to be resolved slowly.

    Hi Joel, Peter and Kalu,

I worked extensively on the SiteMapper tool created by Kalu, I had more success using it with printing Layouts than Mapper.

The only major issue I have had with SiteMapper is the printing of labels during batch printing, the only workaround being creating a
    Note 'Continue'
popup to halt the execution which made it work fine but was very semi automatic.

@Peter Horsbøll Møller I would really like to see Pitney Bowes include some better Map printing functionality for batch map printing as well as the inclusion of grid index printing for atlas like functionality. These kind of questions are very common as this functionality is highly sought after for government and enterprise that use multiple sites or have wide spread assets. If this can be done in open source software, surely it can be looked at in commercial software such as MapInfo. Perhaps you could put this forward for development as a urgent feature suggestion?

    Hi Everyone,

Great to see some momentum and support growing in this space. I do recall now in previous testing with SiteMapper that auto labels did not seem to show. Additionally, with reliance on autolabels, overview maps and scalebars and in conjuction with Layout Templates i am thinking that Sitemapper in this instance will not provide the solution i require.
We still however have a need to continue to create map books, for things like parks, facilities, roads, buildings, carparks Assets etc so no surprises that i 100% agree with what Steve Graham said previously and could be a really big draw card in helping to bring customers on to the 64-bit platform.

Back to the example i have been using, i may need to create one multi-page Layout Template that includes all possibilities and simply remove components that are not required for each set of maps. This way i will just need to figure out some code to batch print the multipage layout in each workspace for 18 or so workspaces, but this is for another day.

    Cheers

The ability to create a Map Atlas would also be very valuable for our use case as well. We are often producing maps and figures as part of our consulting that will cover a wide geographic area that need an east to create map book. As an example, we might be interested in flood levels along 250 km of river, as well as other items (depth, hazard etc). Having to create multiple layouts and then editing the back end is not time or cost efficient when compared to say ARC or QGIS.

I am fully supportive of action to improve this one last missing bit in Mapinfo's layout structure.

    Cheers

    Hi Kalu,
I wanted to let you and others on this thread know that we are actively working on the issue with missing auto labels that you found with the site mapper tool. (MCS-6192).

This is fantastic news! Thanks so much for letting us know Michele, I know this bug has been a thorn in our side preventing us from making our own batch mapping tool.

This is fantastic! Thanks to everyone at Pitney Bowes who acknowledged this and @Peter Horsbøll Møller for all your help.

And most of all Thanks to @Kalu Ribush for creating the SiteMapper tool. I hope to help you improve and develop this into the future.

I agree that the ability to create a map atlas or map book would very helpful to have.

I've been working with PB to look at the issue of dynamic map labels not being generated as part of the batch printing process. I'm happy to say I think this will be fixed in 17.0.3.
I'll also be sharing an updated version of SiteMapper soon, with some new functionality.
    Cheers Kalu

    Hi all,

If you haven't seen it already, there's a new version of Site Mapper on the download site, with a much improved interface and extended functionality.

This updated version can replicate the layer style and label properties of the "parent" site layer to the "child" individual record layers.
