MapInfo Pro

I have a table created in Excel 2016 MSO 64 bit and I am trying to open it in MapInfo v17.0 (64 bit). I have used OPEN TABLE to open it by selecting the "Microsoft Excel (*.xls; *.xlsx*)" option, but then nothing shows up in the table list and when I go to OPEN TABLE again, I get an error message saying "File is already open." but there is nothing in the table list.

I'm fairly new to MapInfo v17 - is there something I need to do differently?

I have attached a copy of the error message which shows that no tables are showing in the table list, yet is says the file is already open. I have also attached the excel file I am trying to open.

I am currently using a workaround of converting the excel table to CSV but this isn't ideal.

Hi Jacqueline,

You are doing it the right way. I copied the attached table and could open it in MapInfo Pro 17.0.

Could you please try it once again, after you go to the HOME tab in MIPRO > click on Close All. This will close the already open table and let you open it again.

Keep the defaults and open the table. It should work.

Thank you so much for looking into this. It must be something related to my MapInfo configuration or install if you can open it but I can't as I've tried again with a brand new empty workspace and the same happens. I can't go to Close All after I open the table as these are greyed out.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Just make sure the file is not Read only. It has the write access available.

No, the tab file hasn't been created. It is a brand new excel file which I am trying to open in MapInfo v17 for the first time.

I've just tried this again with a brand new excel file I just created. I tried to open the file and nothing showed up in Mapinfo. I then try again and it is says file is already open. No tab file is created.

When opening an Excel file, the? next stage would be to present the options e.g. Use the first line for Column Titles and the worksheet/range of data. Is there a dialogue hiding behind MapInfo?

The other aspect would be that you have a 32-bit version of Office  - and you would get an error to say unable to create a table (see article on setting that up).

Thank you for all your time trying to solve this.

The IT support have fixed this for me. It was because I still had Microsoft Access database 32 bit installed on my machine. Once they got rid of this, I could then open the table in MapInfo.

Prior to this they had also uninstalled all the ther 32 bit office products as per

however because the access database was still on my machine and it was 32 bit it seemed to the causing the problem I was having opening the excel table.
