    This map  uses the pie chart thematic to display the contributing components and the total relative risk of a fatality or serious injury in a traffic accident.

    The usual way to display the relative risk is to only look at the total risk score and display that on a 5 band scale - known in Australia as the 5 Star rating system used by automotive associations (RACQ, RACV etc) to lobby governments for improved and better targeted funding of highways.

    Mildura Rural City Council, in conjunction with ARRB (the Australian Road Research Board) had the same analysis done for a number of local roads within our council area.  Using the pie chart thematic mapping Council's engineers and asset managers can now visualise the relative total risk along with what factors contribute mostly to that risk - such as an intersection or road side hazard.  This will enable future works to be planned to reduce the risk by better targeting the biggest contributing risk factors.

    Creative way to share multiple data dimensions! Can you share details about how the points associated with each road segment? For example, do you have a point created at the road segment midpoint or do you track X & Y coordinates for each incident?

    Hi Ashley,

    just to be clear this is a risk analysis from observations about the road and surrounding environment - not actual events.  The risk analysis is calibrated against actual events on a national level. 

    Specifically about your question, the road is analysed every 100m ?, with associated x y location , from video imagery is captured with a car also fitted with GPS, profilometers, accelerometers, etc.  The imagery is used to measure the location of objects adjacent to the road, lane width, edge drop, grade etc and all the other factors used to measure the risk.  These factors are run through a model calibrated against real world incidents to produce the risk ratings - google ARRB iRAP risk factors for more information or https://www.arrb.com.au/anram

    Finally, for each location we have the raw input data and the resulting risk scores for each risk group (intersection, run-off road, etc), a total score  then a 'star rating'
