    During the summer, more people would be outdoors to enjoy the hot weather and there will be the occasional need to find a convenience store nearby for ice cream or cold drinks.

    I have created a map that shows the distribution of Convenience stores within City of Vancouver, using their business licence file on Open Data Catalogue. The City Street and Local Area Boundary files (also from their Open Data Catalogue) are used to provide a reference of location.

    A 500m buffer is created to represent the walking distance to reach a convenience store, and areas with multiple overlaps are identified with varying colour intensities. A dark base map was created to make the colours stand out more and provide a greater contrast.

    From the map, the Downtown and Strathcona areas are well served with numerous Convenience stores, and there should be no trouble in finding and reaching a nearby store. There is also a noticeable corridor of Convenience stores along Mount Pleasant and Grandview. Some areas such as Kerrisdale, have very little Convenience store presence.

    How did you map out the yellow and green places? I'm sure that could be of interest to many users here.

    Once the buffers are created, make a copy of it and use Convert to Polyline. You then create a new blank mappable table with a field to contain the count of overlaps. While the table is editable, select the Polyline layer and use Object Enclose to build a set of non-overlapping objects. Finally, use Update Column to update the blank table by calculating the "count" where the join is based on object of the original buffer contains object from the Enclose object.

    Useful for the shop owners knowing if they can get away with charging more for convenience if they are isolated!?
