MapInfo Pro

?Hi everyone!

I use to work with Mapinfo 12.5 (please don't judge ;) ) Now we just bought MapInfo Pro 17. Some things are different from the oldest version. I have workpaces that I update with newest tables, because I want to keep the same layout trough the projects. In version 12.5, when I created a thematic map, it changed automatically in the layout. The two of them were linked together. In the version 17 I see that my layers are doubled, one for the mapper and the other for the layout. When I create my new thematic map with my new table, the layout does not change automatically as it use to do in version 12.5.

Can someone explain me how the mapper and the layout can be link together or how can I refresh the layout for the new thematic map to appear or anything else that can help me in my work!

Hi Marie-Laurence,

This got me recently too. It finally dawned on me that there is no link between the layout and the mapper in the latest version. Once the thematic is in the layout, it is embedded as its own entity. Deal with it in the layout window as you would normally deal with thematics etc within a mapper window. The original mapper window can be discarded without losing the layout thematic. That's my understanding, anyway.

Coming to your question, the new layout designer introduced in the 64bit version has drastically changed over the years following the feedback from users. In the new versions the map window and the layout window are kind of independent of each other meaning when you create the layout from the map , you have the map cloned in the Layout window. A layout consists of frames that hold the content such as a maps, legends, scale bar, text, or table. The layout is designed by rearranging these frames.

If you want to have the Layout to be the same as your map you will have to make all the changes in the map window and then create a layout of it. Otherwise the changes made on the Layout will not reflect on the map window.

Could you please send the steps to produce or share the data you are using? Ideally it should not reflect in the layout window if you add thematic to your map after the layout it created.

You can create a separate thematic for each map instance for the same map layer because it is a ui thing, not linked to the table.

Thanks everyone for helping me. I guess I found an alternative to the ?link between the mapper and the frame where my map is in the layout :

1. Right click on the frame in the layout
2. Remove Content
3. In the ribbon, under LAYOUT, click on Map
4. Select the map you want to appear in the layout

It is the easiest way I found to kind of update the layout frame with the updated map.
