  • 1.  Where in the cloud should I store my tab files?

    Until now we've been using Mapinfo 12.0 in a virtual desktop environment but now we're moving to the cloud (Office 365 mainly). Trouble is sometimes one of the associated files is 0k and sharepoint won't allow it, plus reading tab files from the cloud seems to be impossible. 

     

    We have a bunch of tab files on our SAN which people edit with Mapinfo and they then "talk" to SSA.

     

    I'm struggling to know where to move them all to when our SAN disappears but in an ever increasing cloud-based world I'm hoping someone else has come up against this and has a possible solution or ideas :)

    Thanks for responding. At the moment we use a SAN within a remote desktop solution to store all the tab files etc. It works fine except for the speed when opening multiple files along with background mapping.

     

    We are now moving to a cloud solution including OneDrive and Sharepoint. It won't allow 0k files (not tweakable unfortunately) and to the best of my knowledge cloud drives don't like situations where opening one file automatically opens others with it, which of course is the case with tab files. If I click on a tab file in OneDrive or Sharepoint it just downloads it automatically.

     

    It just occurs to me that surely many other MapInfo users are slowly moving to hosted or cloud based systems and I wonder how people are managing that transition

    Hi Steve, We at PB have a number of cloud infrastructures that host TAB and Server SSA. We don’t store them specifically in Office 365 or equivalent, we store them at the server level (ie we have access to the full server) and C:\ or other. I would look to see if this is possible. But to really help you and understand the options it would be useful to have a copy of the server architecture. I assume you are using Azure? Other options would be to deploy a database infrastructure. Loading the tab files in to a database would actually provide a number of benefits that are not available within a tab file architecture. If you can share any more information for the group (or privately) we’d be happy to help. Regards Andy
