    Since the status field already shows in the heading of an artifact, is there a way to keep it from also displaying again on the page?

    If you want the Status field to appear on the Artifact at the top, but don't want the field to display on the detail page,  you can accomplish this by deselecting the "Show in Detail tile" field setting on the Status field in the Artifact Type setup.  If the field is editable you will still see it in Edit mode, just not in View detail mode.  Note you must be an Administrator to update the field setting in the Artifact Type.
