Spectrum Spatial (SSA/LIM)

Hello all,

I ask all our users of SSA to access via Chrome, Firefox or Opera and to avoid Internet Explorer at all costs. I've found that SSA on IE is extremely slow to load. Once loaded it is slow to respond and often stalls or freezes mid-task or mid-session..

Has anyone else experienced that with SSA on IE?

I have found that IE while having its limitations seems to work fine for me, although It can become non responsive due to an issue that will be corrected in the 12.1 release. 

Most browsers have weaknesses and strengths that need to be worked around to get the best performance, Edge seems to be nearly as fast as chrome now and may even surpass chrome when Microsoft implement there latest changes to the edge rendering pipeline mainstream.

Thanks for that, Peter. It must be Southwark Council's implementation of IE, then. Honestly, performance of SSA on IE here is terrible - both to load and to operate once loaded.

I'll find out what the council's future plans (if any) are for Edge. In the meantime our users will access SSA on Chrome, Firefox and Opera - all superior browsers anyway (in my opinion).

Thanks for that, John. SSA ion IE is awful here. Our IT service provider insist there is nothing unusual in the way IE has been implemented. Chrome all the way!

Do you have the support call reference that we can track within SSA Engineering? I want to ensure that issues get registered within the QA process of SSA to ensure that future releases improve customer experience

Hi Andy, No, I haven’t reported it to Support (or at least I don’t think I have). I have only mentioned in emails to Mus, Chris and on the portal. Once I realised that SSA is fine in Chrome, Opera and Firefox I just got users to use those instead. Saying that, as IE is the council’s default browser it would be good to have SSA working better on it. But note that Mus has investigated SA through IE and is comfortable with the performance of SSA on IE; it may be about Southwark’s implementation of IE. Although our IT service providers, Capita, say that there is nothing unusual or “wrong” about out implementation of IE. I may be one of those difficult to resolve issues. My company, Mangoesmapping, is a PB business partner here in Australia and have a client reporting the same issue as Stuart, with a Local Government using IE. It gets to the point that even vector tiles of low density data load impossibly slowly.

Issue is possibly complicated through access via Citrix. Each user's virtual machine is only provisioned with 2GB memory and IE cache can get bloated from many different web apps accessed during a long session.

This issue is definitely linked to IE. I haven't replicated on other browsers.

Logging out to dump IE cache usually improves performance for our end users, although that action is unintuitive for naive users and inconvenient.

I have had this a few times but thought that it was related to wms issues that are to be corrected in the next release.

Could this possibly be related to the high Client side CPU usage issue that I have reported and is being investigated by PB Engineering. This happens for me in IE, Edge, Chrome. CPU usage climbs to 28 - 30 percent and stays there, for me this is triggered by changing Map configurations.

Hi Peter. I've just done some extra testing on the client's system, and the issue on IE seems to be most prevalent when using the mouse scrolling wheel to zoom in/out of a map context.

NB. This occurs even with only property boundaries active and no raster Base Map.

Sounds like its fighting for resources, given that it's Citrix it maybe that the Citrix server is under resourced also.

For that type of system I would actually reduce the IE cache down to maybe 128mb if not lower and depending on system OS I would expect to set the swap file to 4092 - 4092 static size for 2 GB RAM. If the Citrix desktop has access to GPU you should check to see if on the advanced tab in IE that software rendering is disabled.

Thanks for your for your comments. I'm glad to know it's not just Southwark going mad.

Note that the poor performance of SSA is via IE v11 on Citrix and on IEv11 direct through a PC. Although to be fair it's slightly less worse via Citrix, which is to be expected.

I have shared the support reference number and asked the appropriate team to manage this as part of the SSA 12.1 release. We have identified the issues above and are planning to fix known issues with IE and Citrix in this release. Once we have sent you the release, please can I ask you to check and report back whether the release fixed the issue you have mentioned.
