  • 1.  Sustainability of the Excel template opening in read only mode

    Hi All,

I am using a pivot table in Excel to organise my data into the format I need for a particular script . As pivot tables are classed as unsupported objects, how sustainable is this going to be over time?

I will be running this script everyday, will it be ok? Or is Winshuttle and the Excel file going to degrade over time?

I can't find much in the knowledge base about if Winshuttle is happy to continually open the Excel in read only mode.

    Thanks

    Hi Ben

We have supported many versions of Office, and to date I have not run into issues with pivot table, nor have I heard that pivot tables are being deprecated.  I have used them, as well, in some scenarios.

I did a search and see some mentions that they were deprecated in Access several years ago, and but I haven't found a post anywhere, including the MSFT support site stating this was the case.

Can you please share your source?

    Best Regards,
    Sigrid

    Hi Sigrid,

I don't have a source, it's just the behavior I've noted when loading from an Excel that has a pivot table.

To fully explain what we are trying to achieve we use Power BI to refresh a data source and then use a function in Power BI called Analyze in Excel to organise the data into the Winshuttle template which uses the pivot table. We have just invested in a Winshuttle RPA licence so we are going to use a virtual resource to run the script.

Regarding what the Virtual Resource is going to do we can either have it copy and paste from the pivoted Excel in to another Excel so that data becomes flat, or just run the script using the pivoted Excel.

Running straight from the pivoted Excel is less steps so maybe a more elegant solution provided no performance issues with Winshuttle continually opening the Excel in Read Only mode.

    Thanks
