  • 1.  Moving SharePoint User Groups Between Test and Production

    Posted 06-10-2020 15:50
    Hello All,

I am hoping someone has a solution. Is there a way to move/copy user groups between environments (test to production)? I know I can move templates. However, I am not finding any details on the support site or any articles here, regarding moving user groups. My guess is that it is not possible, but I am hoping I don't have to manually recreate them. We are using Foundation 12.1, SharePoint 16 in case that matters.

    Thank you!

Yes, you must manually create them in each environment.  Having a promotion/transport process sure would be lovely!

There are two ways of doing this:

    1. Use PowerShell's Export-SPWeb and Import-SPWeb with the include security flag. However, this is not recommended if you have forms deployed to the site as those will be transported (the entire site is copied)
    2. The less intrusive but little more manual way to is create the empty groups in each environment.
      1. Go to the group that is populated with users, click on Actions, then choose "Email members".
      2. Outlook will open an email with all member emails. Copy the emails out.
      3. Go to the empty group in the next environment and add users.
      4. Paste in all the emails, they will resolve to each user.

    Thank you Both!

@Joshua Whitener, I wish we were moving the whole site, but that is not the case. I'll keep these notes for the future though. Thank you for the tip on copy/paste via email. That will at least help a bit.
