  • 1.  Searching * in descriptions in WinQuery

    Posted 03-27-2019 05:24
    Hi there,

My First post here! Im working in a company in Holland and i am building periodic Controls. 1 of those are filtering forbidden characters in the Material Descriptions. The only one i cant filter is the asterix. This is because obviousely WinQuery uses it as a wildcard.

Is there an option that i can make WinQuery understand that i mean * as a text and not as a wildcard.

    Tried
    *
    '*
    *'**
    ***
    *"*"*

But none worked out for me :)
    Does anyone know the solution?

    Hi Douwe,

Sorry for the delayed response. I tried many variations as well and I wasn't able to get * to work as a character. I created a ticket with our Engineering team so when I hear back from them I'll let you know.

You have a couple options right now.

    1. You can use Winshuttle Query to extract all of the materials and their descriptions into Excel. You might need to filter based on material type or something else if you have a lot of materials. Excel can only handle just over a million rows of data. Once all of the data is in Excel, you can search using ~*. Excel uses ~ for an escape so the * is input as a character instead of a wildcard.

    2. In SAP, you can search in MM02 on the description field using *#**. SAP uses # as an escape so * is input as a character instead of a wildcard. I've attached a couple screenshots showing this.

    Hi,

This post is from a while ago but with a little workaround you can get a list of descriptions with a special character in it.
This list contains the texts and the materialnumbers and can be used in a second script for correcting the descriptions.
    It is a GUI-scripting transactionscript.
When creating the script I used the option Maria mentioned ( using *#**) for searching for material which must be changed. I enabled no restriction and it shows all materials with an asteriks in the description.
Now comes the trick. Instead of opening one record  I used Shift+F2 for downloading this list. I entered a path and a unique name and saved the list in a text with tabstop format. After that I marked the first record and opened it. Then, without changing, it I saved. This is needed to get the recording.
In the recording I deleted the row which shows the description in it to be sure it will not change description of other materials when I run it again in the future.
After you run the script you will get a file with the materials in it.  The Excel from the script shows the record which was opened so you can check if the description was changed or not.

I attached the script with Excel file.
    Have fun with it.
