Any of the Intel Core 2 Duo's are pretty good, as long as they have enough memory (try for 4 GB, windows is a hog). Try to get the 7200 RPM disks, that will make a big difference. If you are doing any development on it, high res is important so you can see all the stuff you need to on the screen at once.

It is a laptop, so your performance isn't going to be great, but it also won't be too bad on small data sets.
