First thing to check is that you have a server up and running. If you are trying to use a localhost, check that the Lavastorm Server Console is running in your windows tray icons. (it looks like a green or red circle) If it is not launched, go through your windows Start menu to Lavastorm LAE 4.5, and start the LAE Server. Check the console to verify it started up correctly.

If so, try to connect in BRE. If no connection, next verify your farm setup.
Creating a new server farm:
In BRE.
1. Go to Tools--> Preferences.
2. Go to the Server Farms tab. You can either edit an existing farm or create a new one.
3. Click the NEW button. Give your farm a descriptive name, like localhost (if it isn't there. If it is, just select it and hit the Edit Farm button)
4. Select the new farm and hit the Edit Farm button.

You should see the Server Farm edit screen.
For a localhost, the default values should be the following:NAME: localhost, PORT: 7721, THREADS: 1

Now, at this point if you are just trying to add a localhost entry, you just need to specify the default username/passwords. Which are both 'brain' by default. You can specify any number of threads, although you should be reasonable. I personally use 5 but that is just my preference.

Hit OK and you should be all set to connect to your local LAE server.

Now the Server Console is up and running, I think the problem is related to the fact that I dont have administrative privileges to my local machine, because the IS guys where the only ones that made it work with their Administrative user. I have to ask them to change my privileges and hopefully everything will start working.

Did you install the software on your PC yourself? What do you see in the
Lavastorm Brain 4.1 > menu?

When you are running the installer, after the basic license agreement you should be presented with a component selection screen. It should display:

BRE
Brain Server
BRAIN Server
Install Java

Were all these checked for install? (java may not be if the installer detects it is already installed).
