    GIS is a specialized field that everyone needs to work with??? Sounds like an oxymoron - can you elaborate?

    Another participant states "'Everyone' is a bit extreme for involvement in geospatial. No doubt geospatial is growing and important for BI and more, but not everyone has to be involved.

    As I mentioned in another post, GIS is just a software tool. Specializing in GIS is like specializing in using a spreadsheet...to a degree. It's just another tool, though specialized for working with location-based data. Students looking to specialize need first to focus on a discipline, like forestry, agriculture, geology, economics, politics...and then use GIS to support the work of these disciplines. I would encourage taking classes in using GIS, but I would not advocate getting a degree in GIS.
