Even with the obvious benefits to "Free Your GIS", there is still a need to implement access restrictions - who can view and edit based on data source, data type, geographic extents, etc. How can this best be implemented on an Enterprise scale?

    In many cases this can be done by support the AD roles in your enterprise GIS

    @Peter Horsbøll Møller? makes a great point. Roles based security is essential to the success of any “Free Your GIS” implementation. User restrictions based on business requirements should be identified and built in to avoid such issues.

    This can even be an issue with licensed data that is limited to a certain number of users. Without restrictions, licenses could be violated or unnecessary costs could be incurred.

    What’s about the security aspects of systems that have embedded GIS Solutions within their systems. For example planning systems, insurance systems, retail etc etc. Those systems have been built on specific GIS technology vendors stacks that maximise security, this ensures protection and support should anything happen, how would open source fit with this model. Again it’s something that is often overlooked.
