  • 1.  Raster images adjustments - strange behaviour

    Posted 04-19-2023 10:27

    Hello

I have recently upgraded from v17 to v2021.1.33 (a standalone on a single laptop). I work with multiple georeferenced rasters in a map. Often during a session one or more of these images will suddenly display completely black. I've now realised that this is because the Image Styles have been set to 0% for Contrast and Brightness - but not by me! Any ideas how this happens, and how to stop it? Thanks

    Alison

    Hi Alison
    That was weird behavior.

Does it happen to all the open rasters or just one at a time?
Do you have any add-in/MapBasic tools running that could "do" this to your rasters?

To change these settings you either can go into the Adjust Image Styles dialog via the thumbnail for the raster layer, or via the Style tab that appears when you select the layer.

None of these seems like something you'd do by accident.

Do you notice if they turn black in specific situations?
For example when you do specific actions?

    Hello Peter,

I am not using any tools or add-ins.

I do use Adjust Image Style to tweak the images as I work on them. I digitise very subtle changes in crop appearance on air photos that might indicate underlying archaeological features - so I often adjust on the fly to enhance their visibility.

My suspicion now is that it the images I have adjusted, that are stay as set for a while but then reset to the 0% so I will test this theory over the coming days and get back to you.

    Thanks

    One thing I have noticed:
If you use the Style tab on the ribbon and change one of the sliders.
This slider now is active, and you can change it with the arrow keys and the page up/page down keys on your keyboard.

I know it's a wild shot but I thought I would let you know :-)

    Peter,

I'm embarrassed to say I have never clicked on the Style tab on the ribbon to see what it does, now I that know it will be so useful!

No worries, Alison, sometimes it's hard to see the forest for all the trees.

If you are interested, there is an article about the ribbon interface here: MapInfo Monday: An introduction to the user interface

    Hi Alison
What file format are these rasters?

    Hello John,

Most are tiffs, no compression, greyscale and colour and yesterday it happened to the BingAerial too! I had adjusted the transparency on the BingAerial in that same session, which as I explained to Peter, makes me think this behaviour may only occur when I use Adjust Image Style, so I will monitor this over the coming days.

    Thanks

    Alison
