Yeah, that FindDBMS tool what quite fast as I remember, and flexible, as it could search views as well as base tables.
That tool should still work if you have your data in a database - it doesn't have to be PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
The idea behind Wildcard Search was the same as the idea behind DBMS Find: Providing an easy-to-use tool that quickly can find and list records matching the entered value.
I guess the DBMS Find tool could even be improved to take advantage of some of the text comparison functions of the database.

Thanks John,
MapInfo has always seemed to lack a good gazetteer search, so I'll give this a go. It's a shame that fuzzy searching is less than performant even on much smaller datasets. @Peter Møller once gave me a tool called Find DBMS that could connect to PostGIS and do the search server side (taking advantage of specialised text indexing) which was really fast. I wonder if this can do that?
Otherwise it'd be good to get a tool working that can search the OS Places API, but I'm a bit rusty on querying web services in MapBasic...

Time for a new video
I have been setting up the new Multi Search Tool with OS AddressBase Core for a fast search and locate. It's a free tool to download from the MapInfo MarketPlace. Impressive results - remember to index your search fields.
