  • 1.  Are borders part of the region area?

    Posted 05-15-2023 16:46

I have always wondered this. I have noticed that if I turn borders off on a region, the region size shrinks. Turn the borders back on in the same color as the region color and the region seems to grow. Are borders part of the region size or not?

Attached is an example. It is AT&T cellular coverage in Colorado. First picture is no border, second is border size 3. I know this is a bit of an exaggeration, but even at line size 1, you can see the region size grow. This is most noticeable zoomed out when comparing the two. I want to represent to region correctly to the client, but I don't know what is right.

    Thanks

    No border
    Border line size 3

    Hi Sam

No, a thicker line around the polygon doesn't make the polygon larger (in area). Visually it does seem so but it will not have an effect on the size of the polygon, and it also will not have an effect on a spatial query either.

A thick line around smaller polygons can sometimes make it easier to see this when you zoom out.
