I don't know of anywhere else to post my question - hopefully some of you experts will know the answer :D
I'm on a mission to discover why GB has a grid system using H, N, S & T and have found this PDF from Ordnance Survey in 2011.
    https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/docs/support/national-grid.pdf
The British National Grid appears to be a much larger grid which goes from A-Z across 25 tiles. Only 4 tiles cover GB. Does anyone know why this is? Why would it cover such a wide area? The South East tiles in particular go into other European countries!

I'm sure there is a legitimate historical reason for this, perhaps dating back to OS's military origins. Still if it was me, I would have just used A, B, C & D!! Any ideas?

PS, let me know if I'm not allowed to post this as I agree it is a bit off topic!

    Thanks for that Emma
I have never seen that 5x5 grid. It explains why we are covered by H, N, S, O and T - but why is it so large?

Possibly to cover the UK Continental Shelf extent?
