Joe Francica presented a fascinating webinar today on the Economic Power of GIS. He quoted Nigel Clifford from the UK Ordinance Survey as saying "GIS is a general purpose technology - try doing without it!". With my spatial hat on, I can say I believe this 100%. The power of spatial can provide so much insight into daily business problems, I honestly don't know how some businesses can manage without it! Results of a previous Carto Survey indicate that a phenomenal 42% of people do not use a location tool to analyse location data! During the presentation we also heard the story of a GIS Manager who wanted to prove the value of GIS within his own organisation. His approach? Turn the GIS server off for 20mins and see what happens!! Needless to say, he was inundated with calls and queries - which completely proved his point about how integral spatial information was in their daily business. Not necessarily a recommended approach for you to take, but definitely food for thought!
