    A performance conversation

Many performance complaints attributed to MFX are actually related to workspace allocation strategies.

Poor SORTWK definitions can lead to:

    • Longer elapsed times
    • Additional I/O
    • Excessive space usage
    • Resource contention

Regularly reviewing SORTWK allocation can yield noticeable improvements without changing business logic.

    Why it matters

Sometimes the easiest performance improvement is configuration optimization rather than application redesign.

    Discussion

Do you allow MFX to dynamically manage work space, or do you maintain static SORTWK allocations?

My Opinion is to prefer Dynamic Allocation (DYNALLOC/DYNALOC) whenever possible. It reduces JCL maintenance, automatically adapts to changing workload sizes, and helps prevent over-allocating DASD for jobs that only occasionally process large volumes of data. MFX can dynamically acquire the required SORTWK workspace at runtime rather than relying on pre-defined SORTWK datasets.

That said, some environments still maintain static SORTWK allocations for predictability, performance tuning, or site standards, particularly for very large production workloads where storage requirements are well understood.

Thanks for sharing, Akhil. Dynamic allocation offers significant flexibility and reduces SORTWK maintenance overhead, while static allocations can still provide value for predictable, large-scale production workloads. Choosing the right approach depends on the specific workload and operational requirements

Interesting point, Rhythm. Sometimes it's easy to assume a performance issue needs a bigger fix, when it could come down to configuration choices.
Good reminder to review the basics first.
