  • 1.  RGB values from Thematic mapping

    Posted 07-31-2024 09:36

I have a complex geology table that came through from ArcGIS.  Not being able to use the Arc Layer file, the fastest way to color my map was by using the thematic mapping method.  I would like to 'hard' color to the actual table itself as polygon styles.  Can I do this somehow from thematic mapper to the table?  Or at least get the RGB values?  Any comments helpful!

    Hi Giselle

Yes you can. It may be a bit time-consuming if you have many categories.

Start the process of the >Add Theme and Choose a standard template of region styles and then customise Styles.

Select the first category to Style and select the Foreground colour picker.

Then click on the three dots in cell P17 to arrive at this dialog

    Adjust values to suit.

I would suggest you then save your Template for further use.

If you also adjust your Thematic Legend to read proper English (without underscores and abbrev.), you can save that into your Template.

    Hope that helps

Thanks John.  Yup, I'd figured that out.  A bit of a pain, but wanting to have the same color legend as in Arc, it was the only way to go.  Could you tell me.  If I send a folder with all of the raster, vector subfolders and a workspace (which includes the thematic mapping) to a client, will they have the same custom thematic style templates as well?   How do I ensure that they get the thematic map colors related to each table?  Your comments would be great!

    Hi Giselle

In your scenario, you would need to send the theme template as well.

Found in your User Data folder similar to   C:\Users\john\AppData\Roaming\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\2300\ThmTmplt\MyGeology.thm

However, perhaps a better option would be to save the theme with the table's metadata. So whenever anyone opens the table, the theme will be displayed. No need for a workspace, perhaps!! The legend is also produced automatically.

Tick the box when creating the theme

    Cheers

    Hi Giselle

I'm working on a new version of the WindowHelper tool.

One of the features I'm planning on implementing is: Save Theme Styles to Table. I may have to come up with a better phrase for this feature.

It goes through the individual categories and for each category, it will apply the style of the category to the objects belonging to this category.

Is that what you were looking for?

Below is a gif showing you how it works in my current version of WindowHelper that hasn't been published yet.

I have so far just tested it with a few simple expressions for my thematic. One using a column and another where I extract the first letter from the string in a column.
What thematic are you using? An individual or Ranged? Are you using an advanced expression or just a column in the thematic
    Thanks

Good morning Peter!  This sounds exactly what I was looking for.  In the meantime, I used the individual method of thematic mapping, then I embedded it to the table (which I had never used before!!) and it works well!  It took a while of course to go between Arc/MI but in the end, I have a beautiful colored table, using the same RGB values.

I'm not sure where to mention the 'embed' method, but I'm thinking there are many people out there who would benefit from this knowledge!  Or maybe it's just me – and I missed it somewhere.  Thanks for your valued work with the software!  Appreciated!  Giselle

    Hi Giselle

I'm glad to hear you found a solution using the suggestion from @John Ievers.

The option to embed/save a thematic map with the table is quite powerful. And it's dynamic. If your values change, the style will change too.

Over the last few years, we have shared tips & tricks around MapInfo Pro and our broader Locate via weekly #MapInfoMonday articles here in the MapInfo Pro community, see MapInfo Monday: Default Theme for Tables.

But you are right; It can be difficult to discover all these options - especially if you aren't quite sure about the term to search for.

I would advise posting your questions here in the community, trying a few search phrases, and looking through the list of #MapInfoMonday articles.

I'm certainly open to new ideas on how we can "spread the word" even further.
