  • 1.  Printing map and legend over 2 pages: Layout designer

    Posted 11-24-2022 08:24
I have a situation where I need to print a map, and a (large) thematic legend, on separate A4 sheets.

In the old days of 32-bit I'd set my layout to fit the extents of the print job, giving me 2 landscape pages, where I could put the map on one page, and the legend on the other.

Now in layout designer I can't do that. It will let me add a 2nd page, but I can't put the thematic legend on that page: it appears the legend needs to be on the same page as the map.

The workaround I'm using is to clone the layout, and swap the map and the legend so that only the legend is on the page. But that's not the most pleasing option.

Sometimes things were simple in the old days. Any ideas? Thanks :)

    Hi Caroline
    This has come up before
Printing larger layout windows to smaller page sizes | MapInfo Pro (precisely.com)
Interesting workaround from Peter, of course.
    Otherwise, the answer is: no!

    Hmm.... thanks John.

So it's a 2-step process done outside of MapInfo? That seems like a rather backward step for something that was so useful previously.

It wouldn't be as annoying if it was possible to insert a thematic legend on page 2, but that's not possible.

Cheers, as always, to you (and to Peter). I think I'll have to stick with the clone option, but it's not the most succinct and the client doesn't like it at all!.

    Hi Caroline

How about copying the map onto the second page, making it small and hiding it under a white rectangle, and then adding the legend from this copied map onto the second page?

    Does that make sense?

I had never tried inserting legends on page 2 from a map on page 1...
But I certainly can see why you sometimes might want to do that.

Sometimes it would be useful to insert legends and then be able to "unlink" them from the map and just treat them as standalone frames with rectangles and lines.
