We are using MapXtreme 9.4 in a desktop application to display a Bing Maps layer as background for our working layers. Recently Microsoft has announced they will retire Bing Maps for Enterprise, offering Azure Maps as an alternative.

While reading through the migration guide, it seems that some functionality that is important for us is missing from the Azure maps: "Azure Maps Get Map Tile API doesn't currently offer a satellite/aerial map style with road labels, like Bing Maps Get Imagery Metadata API AerialWithLabelsOnDemand map style." The hybrid (satellite and road labels) style is one of the Bing Maps styles we were using among other styles for the background layer.

Regarding this problem, could you please help us with the following questions?

    • Can MapXtreme 9.4 display tile server layers from Azure Maps?
    • While several styles (hybrid included) can be used for Bing Maps as exemplified in the MapXtreme Developer Guide as well as the code samples you provided, it is uncertain whether all of those styles (especially hybrid) will be available even if the migration to Azure Maps would be generally possible. In case they are, could you provide updated code samples or a short guide for achieving that?
    • Does MapXtreme 9.4 currently support tile layers from Google Maps? Is there any guide available for MapXtreme in particular?
    • We encountered a problem trying to display tile layers from OpenStreetMap. The application either crashes or displays a black rectangle instead of layer data. We tried using both methods: using a .TAB/xml file pair and via API. The xml file content was taken as provided in the Developer Guide. Is there any technical issue accessing OSM?
    • We are also open to other tile server providers besides those mentioned as long as they offer a reliable service. We would appreciate if you have a list of such similar providers with image data accessible from MapXtreme.

    Thank You,

    Hi

MapInfo Pro is also currently using Bing Maps. This means we will look into what this switch means to our products generally.

We haven't looked into that switch yet but will get back on that.

MapXtreme should support tile servers in general. This includes TMS/XYZ and WMTS servers

I have attached a MapInfo Tile Server table pointing at an OSM Tile Server. Can you please try if that works for you? I loaded the table into the Workspace Manager that comes with MapXtreme 9.5 and here it loads nicely.

PS: It seems Bing Maps will be available for existing customers until June 2028.

Sorry it took me so long to answer. I tested the table you provided in both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Workspace Manager that comes with MapXtreme 9.4.0.26. I also tested it with an application that uses the same version of MapXtreme. Each time I tried it either crashed or displayed a black rectangle on the entire surface of the map (then crashed when I zoomed on it).

I also tested the included URL from a browser on the same machine, just to check whether the resource can be accessed. URL http://tile.openstreetmap.org/1/1/1.png redirects to https and displays this:

As for Bing Maps, we were using the free version which will be retired on June 30th, 2025. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer accepts new Bing Maps for Enterprise customers so we cannot benefit for the service being available until 2028.

    That sounds weird.

I just tried opening the OSM map in Workspace Manager and I can easily zoom into the map.

Did you open the OSM Tile Server table into an existing map window?

After reading your post I did the test on a different machine, with a more recent installation of MapXtreme and it's working. The problem now seems to be related to the installation on the original machine only, which i did not suspect initially. Thanks for putting me on the right track! I will try an uninstall/repair and see if it solves it.
