Interface becomes unclickable after switching among tabs

  • 1.  Interface becomes unclickable after switching among tabs

    Posted 03-14-2025 11:36

    Hi

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue when going back and forth between browser, layout and map tabs.

I don't know exactly what triggers it, but it happens several times during a work day. I can't click most of mapinfo interface, except for right button on the tab, make it floating or tab again and that is it.

The only solution I have found is to close Mapinfo from windows bar (because the close X becomes unclickable too), and re-open it.

Also sometimes when switching between tabs, generally between layout and map, one of the tabs 'thinks' I'm holding the click and switches sides with the other one...

Hopefully you have run into this issues and found some solution that does not involve closing and re-opening.

    Thank you for your help

    Hey Paolo

This isn't something I have experienced.

If you are switching between different window types (map, browser, and layout), and your ribbon is set to switch ribbon tabs based on the active window maybe this can explain it. It's a guess as I haven't come across it before.

You could try to turn off the ribbon tab switching. Check this article topic 7 on how to do that. Might be worth a try

Thank you for your answer Peter

I already have that option turned off.

I will try to figure out how to reproduce this issue.

    Paolo,

Hi, just to let you know you are no alone.  I have experienced very similar things in MapInfo 64 bit and never got to the bottom of it.

    Things like :

Not being able to make a map current/active - seems stuck on a browser window. Closing browser window by clicking on the X doesn't help you have to go to explorer panel and right click close the browser from there. Then the Map will become active, almost by default as there is no other window left!

New SQL and Tools Windows will not close - just keep reopening as you try and shut them.  Have to minimise/pin them and then right click close from their position at the side

Buttons just not available to click on, e.g. zoom-in greyed out despite the Map window being active.  Sometimes create points isn't available, but all the other create options are.  Table shows it has numerical fields too.  Have to close and re-open data and then it works fine.

When opening a workspace sometimes Explorer panel opens up taking over the half the screen.

Heatmap doesn't show on screen - layer and table are there but not actual map/data shown.  Have to restart MapInfo and try again.

I used to think add-on .mbxs were causing this but I have had this happen even with no tools loaded.

Have seen this sort of behaviour in v19, v21 and v23.  Actually appeared in v19 when I was running a course today - 1 trainee couldn't make a map active till we closed all the browsers from the explorer panel.

For me it only seems to happen after I've been using MapInfo for a while - over 2hrs. A client who uses MapInfo all day says she has noticed some of the above can happen straightaway.
Peter - how can we record/show this?  It doesn't seem to be linked to specific datasets or mbxs or even Pro versions?
    Nick

Agreed – lots of quirks. I hope to install the new version in the next few days and see if the myriad of problems get fixed!

    Nick,

Hi, thank you for your detailed post.

I've been trying to reproduce this for a while but could not make it. It just happens, as you say, after some hours of normal work.

I do know it involves searching and selecting some records in browser, then switching to map to find selection, then come-back, then switching to layout, which is normal basic workflow.

I was ok with the tabs misterioulsy switching sides, but now that everything becomes unclickable except for the tabs, it's getting annoying (considering the time it takes for the program to close and re-launch).

Hopefully someone will find a solution or workaround.

    Hi

Yeah, this should be reported to our technical support team (support@precisely.com)

You can create screenshots or potential small videos of the behavior.

These issues are problematic to track as they only occur sporadic and for a few users.

If you think it's related to window switching and working for a long time in MapInfo Pro, I can create a small tool that emulates switching windows, selecting a record, and zooming to that location. The tool can run for some time. Can you think of other things you typically have done when you start seeing this misbehavior?

    Peter,

I shall try and grab some video next time it happens.

Some times it is more serious than others.  When it locks up completely you have to use task manager to end Pro, potentially losing loads of work.  Sometimes you can fudge it.  Yesterday I had the issue with a floating Info Tool Window.  No matter how many times I closed it by clicking on the cross it would just pop back into existence again.  However I could right click and make it Tabbed and then close it from there!?!?

    Hi!

I just found what triggers the issue.

It seems related to the floating bar that appears when right clicking.

If you look closely on video 1, when I click on a tab having the right click menu open, the tab 'thinks' I'm trying to move it, so if I click close to its border, it moves (note the 'move symbol' appearing between tabs when clicking on them).

This, sometimes triggers UI partial freezing, as you can see on video 2, where the only solution is to close Mapinfo from taskbar. Maybe it's not clear in the video but I tried to close the tabs and Mapinfo with no success.

Here's the info tool glitch. Just can't close it unless it is out of focus or tabbed

    This is a workaround:

Can you right-click on the Info Window in the Window List and close it from here?

Yes, another alternative is to change it to tabbed mode and close it from there

    Hey

Just trying to understand what you say.

Does the problem only appear when you have right-clicked inside a map window and then click on a window tab close to the Map Mini Toolbar?

Correct, if right click menu is open the glitch happens, it doesn't need to be close to the tab. I assume it's related to the map mini toolbar because in one occasion it got stuck detached from right click menu, in the middle of the screen and had to restart Mapinfo.

I have seen the Map Mini Tool bar detached quite a few times.

Until now, I have been able to "close" it or bring it back simply by right-clicking inside the map window again.

So, I did some more testing and found out it is not related to map mini toolbar, it is just related to clicking close to the border of the tab, where the icon is, while switching between tabs. As shown in the video, eventually the tabs get unclickable, then if I right click they get responsive again

Hmm, how many times to you click on each window tab near the icon?

I tried reproducing, but after 30-50 clicks on each tab, I gave up.

At some point my map got detached and became floating probably because I clicked and moved my mouse before relating the mouse button again.

I'm using Windows 10. Are you also, or are you on Windows 11? Just trying to see if there are other things that could affect the behaviour.

I can see you also have Datamine Discover running. Are you able to reproduce this without having Discover loaded?

Another workaround is to use Ctrl+Tab for switching between windows. Just a tip ;-)

It is something immediate, like 3 or 4 switches and it starts happening. I'm on Windows 11.

Unfortunately, I can't run Mapinfo without Discover, since my license is part of a bundle.

I will start using the ctrl+tab tip, until I get used to it. By the way, I noticed that the yellow dot that shows the active tab gets bugged with this glitch also (as can be noted in the video)

Thank you for your help, Peter
