Hi Mah,
If you open the Shape file via Vector Files (OGR), you should be able to make edits to the Shape file without first saving it into a Native Tab file.
Support for Vector Files (OGR) was added to MapInfo Pro v2021. Read more about this in this post:
MapInfo Monday New OGR Table Format in MapInfo Pro v2021.

Mah,
Things to check:
1) is the layer still a SHP file or other GIS format that MapInfo has just opened - you will need to save a copy first
2) do you have editable rights to the folder the table is stored in
3) does the .tab file say read only in the metadata (open it in Notepad and check) or are the files tagged as read only in their file properties
4) have you opened layer via a workspace which has made that layer read only (open it in Notepad and check)
If I think of anymore I'll add to the list
HTH
